Preservation Of Beauty Is The
Crowning Glory Of The Ozarks
Marble Hill was first established in 1842 and called New California. In 1851 the city was renamed Dallas. Marble Hill, the seat of Bollinger County, was founded in 1851 on a scenic hill at the junction of Crooked and Hurricane Creeks, on the eastern edge of the Ozarks. Today it is a town of 1,457 people in a county of 10,000, a hub of activity in a wonderful area for retirement, recreation and raising a family.

During the Civil War Major Jonas Rawalt took 18 prisoners with 100 Union troops. The courthouse and town was also raided by Col. S.D. Kitchen with 120 Confederate soldiers in 1862. By 1868 the town was renamed Marble Hill because of confusion with Dallas County.
In 1869 a railroad and tunnel were completed 2 miles northwest. Will Mayfield College moved to Marble Hill from Smithville in 1880. The last passenger line of the Belmont Branch of the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad was built in 1932.

Among many picturesque area attractions are the famous water mill and covered bridge that form the centerpieces of Bollinger Mill State Park. The mill, in neighboring Cape Girardeau County, was founded and operated by George F. Bollinger, the leader of the county's settlers.
There are 2 junior colleges within 65 miles. Cape Girardeau also boasts the largest regional shopping mall in southeast Missouri. The famous Mississippi Queen steamboat makes regular stops at Cape Girardeau on its trips to and from New Orleans and points north.
Recreation and sightseeing are popular activities. Nearby Whippoorwill Lake offers excellent fishing, swimming and camping. To the west is Sam A. Baker State Park, and to the southwest is Lake Wappapello.
For the hunter there is a wide variety of wildlife including numerous deer and wild turkeys. Bollinger County is considered to be one of the better hunting and fishing localities in the state. The famous Castor River is also in Bollinger County.
Nearby are the fishing waters of Clearwater Lake, Lake Girardeau, Lake
Wappapello, the St Francis River and, of course, the mighty Mississippi. In addition, it's only a short drive to Duck Creek Wildlife Management Area with 1,800 acres for fishermen and Mingo National Wildlife Reserve with 21,000 acres for game hunting.
